Upcoming Release: Rowing Calendar, 2010

n2503308_33825624_5977Having published my first book on the sport of rowing last month (see the ‘Publications’ page), I am now working on a calendar which will feature some of my rowing related artwork for 2010. The calendar will also be available through lulu.com, and I’ll make the details more clear when I have the body of work complete and the prototype printed. It will include images from rowing venues that I have visited all over the world, including Belgium, Japan, Spain, Canada, and England. Please check it out!

Next Step: Pacific Rowing Club

juniorPageAs of the beginning of September, I will be taking on the role of assistant coach at the Pacific Rowing Club, located in San Francisco. The boathouse overlooks Lake Merced, where the team practices, and the club has an impressive fleet that should prove very useful to a whole host of rowers in the coming season. I’ll be working with both the junior men’s novice and the junior men’s varsity squads, helping to develop the talent for the 1st VIII throughout the year by continuing to aid the improvement of the 2nd and 3rd VIII’s at the club. This will mark the first time that I have ever taken on a coaching position in my hometown, and I am greatly looking forward to the experience. It will be an opportunity to learn the inner workings of a very competitive junior rowing program, while at the same time gaining a wide variety of coaching experience with rowers of many different levels expertise. I’ll be joining an accomplished coaching staff, headed by Bob Maclean, who has a Youth National Championship in the Men’s Varsity VIII in 2007 to his credit already, and who is hoping to expand the club membership in an effort to develop more talent in the coming year. A competitive environment with a host of hard-working athletes, Pacific Rowing Club should prove a good match and I am excited to see what this year will hold.

For more information on the club see the club web page:

Graves Brothers Continue Winning Ways

0806USTrials088-01In the second of two finals, the Graves brothers solidified their place on the US National Team this morning by winning for the second straight day — this time by a margin of roughly three seconds. The duo is going well and seems to be getting faster as the days go by, judging from their first performance through today’s result. Yesterday, there was some question raised on row2k as to whether the two would have enough to hold off the field, as it took a monstrous sprint for the Graves brothers to edge out their closest competition (a UTC/PAC/GMS (Steve Whelpley, Michael Sivigny entry). Today, however, Pete and Tom had established a solid lead by the halfway point, and were able to hold off everything the field could throw at them.
A huge congratulations to both of them from everyone in the ‘Little Knights’ nation, as well as from all the ‘Crimson Bear’ brethren. We know they’ll represent the US very well at the upcoming World Championships, from the 23rd to the 30th of August.

The other boat to watch was the coxed pair, with UCLA grad Martin Reschke and ‘Crimson Bear’ veteran Chris DeFelice in a very strong Penn AC entry. Unfortunately, though they made up a great deal of ground on the US Rowing Training Center entry of Henrik Rummel and Cal grad Troy Kepper, they fell just under two seconds short of their goal. It was a hell of a fight and congrats to Chris and Martin for attacking it so well. We can only hope that Martin continues to develop his talents as a rower in the future and we’ll be watching to see what his next step will be.

And Chris — any thoughts on a Tokyo redux? For that matter — Martin, what about you?

Graves Brothers Kick Ass at US Trials

0806USTrials016-01.JPGPeter and Tom Graves, last seen here as members of the victorious ‘Crimson Bears’ (Kent Mitchell RC) and ‘Little Knights’ boats that took the San Diego Crew Classic by storm, are currently racing at the US Trials in hopes of going to the World Championships later this month. And guess what — they’re fast. The duo took their heat on Tuesday with the fastest qualifying time, and headed into the first of two finals earlier today. Despite being down at the halfway point of the race, Pete and Tom dropped the hammer big time on their opponents with 500m to go, and took first place by just over half a second. They’ll try to repeat this amazing performance once more tomorrow in order to make the US National Team and represent the USA at the upcoming World Rowing event, to be held this year in Poznan, Poland.

Good luck you two, and know you’ve got the whole ‘Little Knights’ nation cheering you on from a distance!

In other US Trials news, we have a Martin Reschke (UCLA Class of 2009) sighting. He and Chris DeFelice (member of the 2008 victorious Crimson Bears crew at the Waseda Invitational Regatta in Tokyo, Japan) are in a coxed pair together — and they’re going quite well! They had the first of two finals today, and came up just under three seconds short of Worlds qualifying position. Good luck in the second final!

Price Named to UCLA Women’s Rowing Coaching Staff

n2503306_33222173_408Justin Price was recently named to the coaching staff of the UCLA Women’s Rowing program, and will bring his three years’ experience as a coach as well as his four years as a Bruin oarsman to the table when the team meets for practice this Fall. After a successful career in his own right at UCLA, Justin decided to take on more than just law school when he began at Notre Dame in 2006. During his tenure as coach for the Notre Dame Men’s Rowing frosh sqaud, he not only recruited record numbers of athletes, but also made the most of the talent at hand — in the two years of ACRA history to date, only Michigan can arguably be said to have had the success that Price had with Notre Dame.
Last year at the inaugural ACRA Championships, Price brought a Frosh VIII and a Frosh Lightweight IV+. Both boats took first place — every member of his squad went home with a gold medal. This year, he nearly repeated the same feat, this time taking bronze in the Frosh VIII, silver in the Second Frosh VIII, and defending last year’s victory in the Frosh Lightweight 4+. Again, every member of his squad went home from the ACRA regatta with a medal. The UCLA Women’s program is lucky to have Justin, who will bring the same toughness, winning attitude and attention to detail to his new position as assistant coach.

In the meantime, the question remains as to who will take over the UCLA Men’s Rowing program following the resignation of Paul Mokha.
